The Hungarian EU Presidency shows good practices in the field of allocation of EU transport funds.

“Our compliments to the Hungarian government for using almost 2% of the EU transport resources allocated to Hungary on cycling“ stated Dr Bernhard Ensink, ECF Secretary General to Dr Endre Horváth Hungarian Deputy State Secretary for Tourism. It is actually more than twice the EU average. The current Hungarian EU presidency is a good opportunity to stress how member states can optimize the use of EU funds.

Dr Horváth was visiting the ECF office in Brussels to discuss the cooperation between ECF and the Hungarian government on developing cycle tourism and EuroVelo in south-eastern Europe. Hungarian authorities will focus on 3 areas: the Danube “EuroVelo 6”, the lake Balaton and the lake Tisza “EuroVelo 11” which are important milestones to complete EuroVelo in Hungary. Dr Horváth would like to work together with ECF in order to develop sustainable tourism at European level. He believes that cycling tourism contributes to the development of local businesses and improves the quality of life. „Tourism is a nice way of changing the culture of transportation”.
